The Inexplicables by Cherie Priest

What can I say? I'm still in love with Cherie Priest's Clockwork Century series.

The story was great as usual. Loved all the descriptions, loved the world she made (or how she turned the existing world into something else, rather); I was bit torn at first about Rector, he seemed so wimpy and whiny; but then towards the end I decided that I liked him after all. He had (by then) a decent amount of traits that started balancing him out and made him sort of redeemable; he was, after all, more or less growing up and finding himself as the book progressed. Plus, scary setting to live in (and with his back story), so one can forgive the wimpy parts, I guess.
But then I'm biased. If I had to choose, I'd rather stick around with whiny Rector than annoying Zeke.
Then again, if I -really- had to choose, I'd stick to either Cly or Yaozu (or Angeline!) and not one of the bothersome kids, hah.

I wasn't entirely happy with the Inexplicable's explanation (or 'explicability'). It was kinda cute in a way, but mostly silly, [and I really would have rather the inexplicable to be a real monster, or just a somewhat mutated human or something.] It was original though, or maybe just different, I guess; but since I was unhappy with it, it detracted from my enjoyment.

And then there was the ending. Somehow it seemed a little bit rushed.

[The Inexplicable was apparently released but we suddenly not get any more information than what the characters feed us about it, which is not much. Even though we were mostly show everything else so far.
The little war for Seattle was great, or it could have been, but frankly with all the Rector-character-development/Kids-roaming-around and Inexplicable story, I didn't really see as much as I would have wanted from before and -after- the fight.

I think it would have done better if the book had been focused on the fight to take over Seattle with the Inexplicable on the side than the other way around. It would have also matched better with the rest of the series.]

Because of those issues, I rated 4 instead of 5 (and because I'm biased in my love for the series, I rated it 4 instead of 3). I do agree this is one of the weakest in the series though.
